We were proud to participate in the Reston Historic Trust & Museum’s Annual Reston Home Tour again this year! It was another full home remodel here in Reston, which we completed in August 2016, and was one of the stops on the 2017 tour, alongside five other unique homes. Having one of our remodeled homes in the Reston Home Tour for a second time was a great honor and the theme of this year’s Tour, which was in its 16th year, were homes that have given their owners new perspectives on their lives.
This breathtaking townhouse on Hemingway Drive had an eventful road leading up to this year’s Home Tour. Homeowners Terry and June McGurn first met in 2010, moved into the town house in 2012, and got married in 2013. The two did not waste any time during their new life together and began traveling, planning their wedding, and organizing a home renovation all within three years of meeting. They chose Synergy Design & Construction as their contractor for their renovation and originally planned only for a kitchen renovation and master bath remodel, which were completed in 2015. Unfortunately, just three weeks later, their charcoal grill caused a fire.
Because the fire started on the deck after the McGurns had gone to sleep, substantial damage had already been done by the time they awoke and could get the fire department to extinguish the flames. The back of the home was completely destroyed, and all three levels of the house suffered serious damage. It was clear they either had to start looking for a new home or undergo the rebuilding process.
The Silver Lining: A Fresh Start
Always willing to take advantage of opportunity when it presented itself, the McGurns were not down for long. They loved the neighborhood and knew they wanted to stay. They saw the disaster as a chance to complete a full home remodel, to start over and design every part of the home their way. Most notably, they wanted to create a more open floor plan and bring more natural light into their home.
Impressed by our meticulous attention to detail and step-by-step guidance during their initial kitchen and bathroom renovations, the McGurns once again picked us as their contractor for their whole home remodel in Reston. We helped them design and rebuild their beloved home so they could stay close to everything that mattered. Thankfully, the McGurns moved back into their beautifully transformed home after construction was complete and are now continuing their wonderful life together and making many new memories.
