As many of you know, I’ve been a long-time supporter of our area’s Special Olympics programs. I believe in doing all I can to encourage the athletes and there’s nothing like watching them enjoy sports and thrive. Recently, I had the pleasure of playing golf with Reston’s own David Siewart, an athlete who participated in this year’s state games in Virginia Beach.
Held on November 4th and 5th, David and I played 18 holes on Saturday and 9 holes on Sunday at Virginia Beach National Golf Club. Scoring a combined total of 151 in an Alternate Shot format, David won the Bronze Medal. Seeing the sheer joy and excitement David and the other athletes share playing in the games is more special than words can describe. It was an incredible day and I’m happy to say David and I have stayed in touch since the event. Living in Reston, it’s easy to support each other practicing at Reston National Golf Course and I feel honored to call him my friend.
This was actually my second state game, and in addition to volunteering as a playing partner, I’ve served the last 7 years as Treasurer for one of this area’s largest cooperative fundraiser for the northern Virginia (Area 26) Special Olympics and the Down Syndrome Association of Northern Virginia (DSANV). Held for the last several years at Springfield Country Club, the golf tournament event sees individual and corporate sponsors from across northern Virginia. I’m proud to be such an integral part of this event. I see the difference it makes in the lives of the players and I love encouraging others to support these incredible athletes.
When I first started Synergy, I never realized how much it would allow me to serve the community, and I love encouraging all our employees to do the same. At Synergy, we believe a home remodeling company should work to improve people’s lives beyond creating beautiful spaces. I am excited to welcome other opportunities for serving the Reston community in the future, with both home renovations and volunteer efforts.
