Kitchen Remodeling Trends: We’ve Got You Covered!

By January 17, 2019June 14th, 2024No Comments

The last of the holiday decorations have been taken down and put away (except for that one we all know we’re going to find behind the couch in April), all the chocolate has been eaten, the good intentions of going to the gym at least 3 times a week may or may not be going so well and we’ve had the first significant snowfall of 2019. A perfect time to grab a coffee, relax and think about that Kitchen remodel you’ve been dreaming of!

Our Interior Design team recently called some of the remodeling design trends they think we’ll see a lot of in 2019. This month, we are focusing on the “must haves” we think we’ll be seeing more of in Kitchen remodeling in the next few years.

So, without further ado, here’s our latest dose of inspiration for your Kitchen remodel!

Flat Panel Cabinetry

Shaker cabinetry has been ruling the roost in recent years as one of the go-to cabinetry design choices. It’s a beautiful look. However, there is a growing trend towards flat panel cabinetry that is starting to pop up all over the design magazines. You don’t have to have an ultra contemporary home for this look; it can also work really well in a mid-century modern space. Flat cabinetry is a also a great choice if you don’t have a lot of square footage to work with – it can looking stunning in a small Kitchen, too. I absolutely love this example on Houzz, but in the interests of full disclosure, this beautiful contemporary Kitchen remodel is in my hometown in Ireland!

Concealed Appliances

Concealing your refrigerator behind cabinetry is nothing new per se, but the extent to which it is now being done is something new. Many homeowners are now choosing to conceal dishwashers or hide microwave drawers in discreet places on the Kitchen island so they are not immediately obvious to the eye. Although appliances are clearly needed for functionality, concealing them can make the space feel bigger because visually your eye is not drawn to them. Beyond cabinetry, appliances can be built-in or hidden using appliance garages and putting them discreetly behind the facade of a door or panel. In this recent home remodel, we concealed a large refrigerator using matching cabinetry doors. When the doors are closed, it looks like a pantry and creates an optical illusion of space, but, when the doors are open you can see the true size of this large refrigerator!

Hidden Hoods

The trend for Kitchen hoods being a design element in their own right has been around for a while. The latest trend is for hoods to be hidden completely so they blend in more seamlessly with the overall Kitchen design. An added plus is they don’t take up as much real estate (although don’t forget that ducting still has to go somewhere if you want to vented to the exterior of your home).

Hidden Hardware

One of the most recent trends in Kitchen hardware is away from the all satin-nickel look towards softer rose brass or even mixed metals in Kitchen remodels. Mina highlighted this trend in one of her Reston Now columns, “Reston Home Design Trends that are Here to Stay” In addition to flat cabinetry, we are seeing a trend towards hidden hardware that provides any Kitchen remodel a modern, contemporary vibe. This beautiful Kitchen remodel shows 3 trends together – the flat cabinetry, hidden hood AND one of the colors our Interior Designer Camille picked for 2019 – the color black!
