As an Interior Designer who focuses on what we call “material selections”, Camille is the person our clients work with when it comes to choosing all the finishes for their remodel from backsplashes to appliances to flooring to lighting to fixtures – and everything in between! It takes an experienced professional with a passion for helping people to create spaces that are not only beautiful to look at but comfortable to live in. So, let’s meet and learn more about Camille and find out her role in ensuring Synergy is one of the best home remodelers in Reston!
What was your path to working in the home remodeling industry?
I actually didn’t start my career in residential remodeling right out of college. I graduated with a degree in Business and Marketing, working in the advertising field and really enjoyed the creative outlet it gave me. But, after having children and renovating our first home, I decided my true passion was really in the world of residential interior design. So, I furthered my design education, gained experience working for a design-build firm and launched my own design consulting business. After several years of working independently, I realized I missed being part of a family. Fortunately, I found my second family here, at Synergy.
Tell us more about what your day-to-day looks like?
In my day to day role, I take the lead on helping our clients make all selections needed in their renovation. I start out with an initial Preliminary Design meeting and really get to know our clients by asking questions about their likes and dislikes. We walk the space and I show them samples of ideas to really gain a good sense of what style they are drawn to. From there, I come up with an overall Design “Moodboad” to capture their design aesthetic and work on getting all of their selections made. Whether it’s visiting showrooms or sending online options, I help them select everything from cabinetry color, countertops and tile, to lighting, plumbing fixtures and paint selections. In addition, I also visit the site when installation of lighting, tile, etc. begins, so I can make sure the design intent is being met and everyone is on the same page.
What skills are important to have to work in your role?
I think first and foremost, you need to be a good listener and really hear what your clients are asking for. It’s a delicate balance in giving them what they want, but also guiding them if you know the end result won’t work. In addition, not only do you have to be creative, you also need to be extremely organized, able to juggle many tasks at once and manage deadlines. My role includes working with the rest of the Synergy team and being cognizant of selecting items that I know will arrive on time so we can ensure everything stays on track and the project completes on time. If something is on backorder and is going to hold the project up for a few weeks, it’s my job to help find something similar, that will give the the same look and feel, but also not delay the project.
What do you love the most about your job?
I love working with our clients and helping them bring their vision to life. Getting to know their family and lifestyle is important to make sure we are not only selecting beautiful items, but also items that will meet their functionality needs. Meeting them at showrooms, showing them all the options and watching them become excited is the most rewarding part.
What are the most challenging aspects?
The most challenging aspect is making sure the selections we make meet the production schedule deadlines and the budget. Having a working knowledge of different brands and suppliers is crucial to meeting these deadlines. In addition, it’s important to provide our clients with the overall vision as we continue to make these daily selections. Providing them with weekly selections sheets so they can watch how it all comes together is something we do to achieve that.
Tell us more about your favorite home remodeling project and why it resonated with you.
Wow—that’s a tough one, since there have been so many! I think my favorite is still the very first project I worked on at Synergy. It was a large main level and basement renovation in Fairfax and I just loved the way all the finishes came together. The overall design made such great use of every inch of space. We renovated the kitchen and incorporated a large island and custom, built-in banquette area, a large pantry with barn door, a beautiful new mudroom and powder room and furnished almost every room on the 1st and 2nd levels. It was an amazing project to work on because it really showed me what a great group of talented people I worked with.
What advice would you give for anyone thinking of a career in interior design or residential home remodeling?
I would say go for it! Talk to others in the field and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Also, gain as much experience as you can. There are so many “hats” you wear as a designer, so understanding what your passions and strengths are will only help add to your success. For me, the client interaction and helping them make their selections is what I love most.
