In addition to his skilled craftsmanship, as a Lead Carpenter Joey is responsible for the day-to-day management of the home remodeling projects he is assigned to. This means he not only installs cabinets, trim and works on fine finishes, he also manages any trade partners working in the home and ensures the project stays on schedule.
All of our Carpenters, Interior Designers and Project Managers are in-house team members, so let’s meet and learn more about Joey and find out his role in ensuring Synergy is one of the best home remodelers in Reston!
What was your path to working in the home remodeling industry?
It’s actually something I just fell into. A lot of the guys in my family did construction and I would sometimes help them in the summer when I was younger. I used that experience to get a 9 to 5 job as a helper and worked my way up over the years. I always enjoyed working with my hands and using power tools to build things even at an early age.
Tell us more about what your day-to-day looks like?
In this industry, our days can vary radically. Some days I’m doing demolition, and some days I might be installing cabinetry all day. Other days, I might spend most of my time managing our trade partners and ensuring we keep our home remodel on schedule. The variety actually keeps this trade interesting.
What skills are important to have to work in your role?
Thinking ahead is very important to ensure the home remodeling process goes smoothly. Good communication goes a long way too. As a Lead Carpenter, I have to ensure I have open lines of communication not only with the Synergy Team, but also with our trade partners and, most importantly, the client I am working with.
What do you love the most about your job?
Definitely seeing the end result of each home remodel. It’s extremely satisfying seeing the clients get excited when they see the final product.
What are the most challenging aspects?
I would say the unforeseen obstacles. Even though we do “exploratory surgery” behind the walls before we start a home remodeling project, we sometimes find things we weren’t expecting inside walls or floors aren’t aligned. It definitely requires some problem solving skills.
Tell us more about your favorite home remodeling project and why it resonated with you.
I’ve worked on a few over-the-top jobs over the years. It always blows me away how many people and different skills are involved, and how much planning it takes to build one structure.
What advice would you give for anyone thinking of a career in interior design or residential home remodeling?
Residential construction certainly isn’t for everyone, but it can be very rewarding – especially for people who don’t see themselves at a desk job. My advice would be to get into an apprenticeship in a great company, pay attention and ask lots of questions!
