We’ve been saying it for a while, but a tub is no longer a ‘must-have’ when it comes to the primary bathroom. Many of our clients have opted to go tub-free for their bathroom remodel and replace their tubs with statement showers instead. We’re big believers in designing to how you use your space, so if you don’t use your tub now put that square footage to better use and make it a fabulous walk-in shower instead!
Need a little bathroom remodeling inspiration to see how it’s done? Here are eight great examples of home remodels that went tub-free with gorgeous results! Slide left to right to see the before and afters and get inspired by what’s possible in your bathroom.
A Transitional Bathroom Packed with Design Details
In this Primary Bathroom, our clients were ready to make some BIG changes! The floorplan of the bathroom was completely reconfigured. We moved the double vanity to the prior location of the tub and created a stunning double shower in the space where a small shower stall and toilet once stood. We moved the location of the toilet and created privacy with a separate toilet room with a pocket door instead.

A Double Shower and Gorgeous Bathroom Tile
The homeowners in this whole home remodel in Reston completely reconfigured the Bedroom/Closet/Bathroom in the Primary Suite to create an exquisite bathroom with a floating double vanity, shower for two and heated floors.

A Modern Bathroom Makeover – with Privacy!
The Primary Suite of this home underwent a HUGE change! The existing platform tub had no walls and was open to the bedroom on one side with a small single sink vanity bathroom on the other. We used some of the square footage from the dated and oversized platform tub to give the owners a new closet, and created a gorgeous new Primary Bathroom with double vanities and a large glass shower. Not only is this a gorgeous bathroom remodel, it also provides privacy!

A Universally Designed Bathroom with a Curbless Shower
Our clients live in a beautiful home in a lake community in Reston, but they were ready to make significant changes to their Primary Bathroom. The house was built in 1986 and although the bathroom was large with natural light cascading into the space from existing skylights, the platform tub was overpowering the space and the existing shower was cramped into a small nook. Planning to age-in-place, our clients were ready to not only modernize the entire space but also make it more functional for their needs by replacing the tub with a curbless shower. Not only is the new shower a stunning design feature in itself, universal design ensures it is now easy to enter without any trip hazards.

A Frameless Shower and Beautiful Blue Bathroom Cabinets
The Master Bathroom in this home was reconfigured and designed to more comfortably accommodate the tall homeowner and is barely recognizable with a large new gorgeous frameless shower with a built-in bench. The existing shower and toilet had been scrunched into one end of the bathroom behind a partition wall making the whole bathroom feel much smaller than it really was and not taking advantage of the high vaulted ceiling. Removing the tub completely and relocating the toilet to that location created a much larger, airy feeling in the bathroom.

A Case Study in How to Remodel A Bathroom!
Our clients love their Reston townhome and friendly neighborhood, but their outdated Master Bathroom was ready for a transformation! The lime green wall color had to go. The little-used bathtub took up a lot of space. We created the larger shower by removing a bulkhead and non load-bearing wall. The bathroom previously only had a single vanity sink, but by reconfiguring the space and removing the tub we created enough room for a dual vanity by reclaiming space from an abutting hallway linen closet.
The result: a spa-like retreat! The whole bathroom is larger and packed with design details and gorgeous tile. The best part? No more green walls!

A Show-Stopping Shower
This Reston Town Center condo has a great view and spacious interior, but the bathrooms were original to the unit and our clients were ready to upgrade them to not only better match their personal aesthetic, but make them more functional for their lifestyle. All three bathrooms (Master Bath, Guest Bath and Hall Full Bath) were remodeled.
Removing the tub in the primary bathroom was one of the main drivers for our clients. The results are not only beautiful, but this one-of-a-kind shower is luxurious, too!

Modern Bathroom with “WOW” Glass Shower Enclosure
Our clients previously made a number of changes to the interior to modernize their home, but were ready to tackle the bathrooms – all at once! Although the previous owner had done a Master Bath remodel some years ago, the Guest Bath and Powder Room were original to the house. Our clients were ready to create modern spaces that better reflected their personal aesthetic and matched the rest of the home.
Enter Synergy Design & Construction! As the clients were planning to live in the home during construction, we created a customized plan so at least one operational bathroom was available for the duration of the project. The result: three totally transformed bathrooms that are modern but warm and packed with design details! The pièce de résistance was the primary bathroom where the over-sized tub had to go to make room for this stunning glass shower enclosure with a linear drain instead.
