The owners of this 1960s split-level house were ready to completely rethink and redesign the first floor of their home. The family had outgrown the small Kitchen which was closed in and located in the middle of the main living space, creating lots of separate rooms and a chopped-up floorplan.
Family time and entertaining are a top priority for this client, so the overall design goal was to create a much larger, more functional Kitchen and better flow between spaces on the first floor. We started by removing the walls separating the Kitchen from the Dining Room and from an awkward “Foyer” area where you entered the Main Level, which had become a drop-zone for kids’ toys. This allowed us to create a much larger open concept Kitchen and dining area. We also added a second entrance to the Family Room off the Kitchen allowing for easier access to the patio doors at the back of the home that lead to the yard. The final touch? Removing and replacing the dated metal stair railing leading up to the main level to ensure continuity of the new design.
