Our Approach

Using a design-build approach, where the same contractor that designs your kitchen renovation builds it, we help ensure your project is as you envisioned from start to finish. This approach drives single-point accountability and eliminates the hassle in identifying and selecting the right designer, builder and tradespeople for your home makeover.

After you determine your budget, we will work with you to make sure you don’t encounter the common financial remodeling and renovating pitfalls that can come with projects. We will help you every step of the way to create an open, inviting and efficient space that you can be proud of.

Our design-build team dedicates their talents to your renovation in a way that makes you stand out from similar houses in your neighborhood and gives you the relaxing, beautiful environment that will add energy to your life.

The Renovation Roadmap

Your Personal Guide to an Exceptional Remodeling Experience

Have you ever wondered why renovations go wrong?

  • Contractor says your kitchen will be completed in three weeks, and two months later there’s still no end in sight…
  • You go with the “less expensive” guy, only to be given a stack of change orders that eventually cost you 40% more than what you agreed to…
  • You feel like your own project manager because no one’s on site everyday to answer the subcontractor’s questions…

We understand that the key to a great customer experience is having a clear pathway and strong synergy between the design AND the construction. We know that when there’s a clear path ahead of you, you can have a stress-free and fun renovating journey and actually Renovate Happy.

Having worked in the real estate, sales, and design fields since 1994, Mina experienced first-hand the frustration and dissatisfaction of homeowners during the remodeling process. As the founder and CEO of Synergy Design & Construction, she is responsible for overseeing the design, sales, marketing, and client experience in all aspects of every renovation.

Mina speaks regularly at industry conferences and seminars and has been interviewed for national, local, and online media outlets. As Past President of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) Greater DC Chapter, Mina is committed to helping women business owners take their business to the next level.

Mina is a native Virginian who lives and works with her husband in Reston. She enjoys biking, camping, yoga and is an avid writer and golfer – with the accomplishment (luck) of an 83 yard hole-in-one.

Mark Fies has brought his extensive expertise in structure and process development into the design and construction industry. Along with his wife, Mina Fies, he helped develop Synergy Design & Construction’s unique model for design, renovations, and new construction.

Mark is no stranger to running a business. Prior to entering the design/build industry, he managed the operations of six multimillion-dollar facilities for two Fortune 500 companies, five of which were new store openings in emerging markets. He has over 18 years in retail management, including process implementation and improvement, employee management, finance, and direct customer relations.

Mark proudly served on the Board of Directors as Chairman of the Board and past President for the metropolitan area’s chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), the only independent national association dedicated solely to the remodeling industry. Mark shares NARI’s focus on professional conduct, continuing education and training, and fair and ethical treatment within the industry. As an authority in the remodeling industry, Mark was also invited to participate in Harvard's Remodeling Futures Program, part of their Joint Center for Housing Studies.

Nicola Caul Shelley

Director of Sales & Marketing

A self-confessed design and renovation habitué, Nicola experienced a few ‘renovation nightmares’ until she found her partner with Synergy Design & Construction for a main floor and kitchen remodel. The Synergy team impressed her with their commitment to customer service, attention to detail and their “above and beyond” approach. Wind the clock forward several years and she became part of the Synergy team where she works on new client acquisition, marketing and client experience.

Prior to joining Synergy, Nicola worked in private, non-profit, governmental and consulting enterprises and brings with her over twenty years of project and program management experience. She also specializes in the implementation of key strategic programs as well as process design and process improvement. She has a track record of successful delivery of large scale projects and leading multidisciplinary teams.

Originally from Ireland, Nicola previously lived, worked and traveled extensively in Europe, East/South East Asia and North America. Her experiences overseas influence her design aesthetic and gave her an appreciation of seeing the world through a multi-cultural lens. Nicola is now a long-time resident of Reston – a place she moved to nearly twenty years ago “for a few years”. For her, the diversity of the area and the sense of community that Reston’s founder, Robert E. Simon, created and cultivated have truly made it home.

She was an integral part of the entire project life cycle from land acquisition, to design, through construction and sale of the properties. Camille DeLew

Interior Designer

Camille fell in love with design at an early age. Constantly changing her bedroom wall color, she found it intriguing how different the room could look with a touch of color and texture.

After a successful career in the Advertising and Publishing fields, she decided to use her creativity, eye for color and detail, project management and business skills to pursue her passion. She furthered her design education, gained experience working at a local design-build firm and then set up her own interior design company before finding her home at Synergy Design and Construction.

A true design enthusiast, she believes the best-designed spaces are those that feel like you — spaces that are not only beautiful to look at, but also comfortable to live in. She's passionate about mixing color, pattern, texture and personal touches to create unified interiors. Getting to know clients is one of her favorite aspects of the job, allowing her to personalize projects with beautiful results.

Originally from New York, she now resides in Northern Virginia with her husband and two children. When she's not transforming client homes, she'll most likely be cooking, decorating her own home or spending time on the soccer field.

Barbara Doyle

Project Coordinator

Barbara grew up in a rural town outside Pittsburgh, PA. She spent much of her free time in the vegetable and flower gardens with her father, in the kitchen with her mother; or later, toiling away at the sewing machine or in the workshop exploring what would become her future passion; design and build. After art and interior design school, she specialized in marble tile and carved marble fixtures, custom artisanal porcelain and one-off designs that established her in the high-end design market to include renovating one of America’s Castles.

Barbara then married the love of her life and spent the next 20 years on a professional adventure that led her across the country learning regional histories, design trends and those subtle cultural design elements that turn a paper design into the embodiment of the client’s needs, wants and personality. She focused on kitchen and bath restoration, remodeling and new construction; from cottage to commercial, one-off designs and even leading design-build teams delivering 1,800 new kitchens per year. These experiences allowed her to master all aspects of design, material selection, importation, manufacturing, product lines, transport, construction and customer service from the East coast through the Midwest. She saw what worked, what didn’t and how to avoid problems while bringing the client’s vision to life.

In 2001, Barbara made Northern Virginia her home, and now lives in Ashburn with her husband. A country girl at heart, Loudoun strikes a hard-to-find balance of history, nature, community and culture. Barbara enjoys spending time in her kitchen baking and cooking, outside playing in the dirt in her flower gardens, taking quiet drives in the country exploring nature, visiting local wineries, and getting together with family and friends.

Chris Borwey

Lead Carpenter

Chris started his career in carpentry at a young age. His father worked in construction in the elevator industry and he was always working on projects in the family home. By his mid teens, Chris was already gaining hands-on experience when his father remodeled their Kitchen, learning how to install cabinetry, countertops and even helping to hook up gas lines under the house! He worked with wood from a young age - a skill he is teaching others including building pinewood derby cars with his son's Boy Scout troop in his role as Assistant Den Leader.

It's planning for the unexpected and the feeling of accomplishment of a job well done that Chris enjoys most about carpentry. He has learned over the years that careful planning means predictable results which avoids surprises and "oh no" moments. He has worked on all aspects of carpentry, including multi-million dollar homes on the West Coast.

Originally from South Dakota, Chris previously lived on both East and West Coasts before relocating to Northern Virginia to be closer to family. Joey has worked on a variety of projects and all aspects of home remodeling in addition to carpentry, including experience in electrical, plumbing and drywall. He has a passion for trim carpentry and finish work. He takes great pride in seeing the end product of a project and knowing it is the result of his hard work. He has also worked on new construction, working on the kitchen and bathrooms of a multi-million dollar home in Leesburg. The home included a basement bowling alley and a two story library with a rotunda. It was a special project and one of his favorites as it allowed him to see all aspects of the home come together.

Joey now lives in Herndon with his wife. In his free time, he enjoys restoring and modifying his rare muscle car and loves learning auto mechanics. He and his wife also enjoy spending time outdoors camping, hiking, biking and honing his drone photography skills.
