Our Approach

Using a design-build approach, where the same contractor that designs your kitchen renovation builds it, we help ensure your project is as you envisioned from start to finish. This approach drives single-point accountability and eliminates the hassle in identifying and selecting the right designer, builder and tradespeople for your home makeover.

After you determine your budget, we will work with you to make sure you don’t encounter the common financial remodeling and renovating pitfalls that can come with projects. We will help you every step of the way to create an open, inviting and efficient space that you can be proud of.

Our design-build team dedicates their talents to your renovation in a way that makes you stand out from similar houses in your neighborhood and gives you the relaxing, beautiful environment that will add energy to your life.

The Renovation Roadmap

Your Personal Guide to an Exceptional Remodeling Experience

Have you ever wondered why renovations go wrong?

  • Contractor says your kitchen will be completed in three weeks, and two months later there’s still no end in sight…
  • You go with the “less expensive” guy, only to be given a stack of change orders that eventually cost you 40% more than what you agreed to…
  • You feel like your own project manager because no one’s on site everyday to answer the subcontractor’s questions…

We understand that the key to a great customer experience is having a clear pathway and strong synergy between the design AND the construction. We know that when there’s a clear path ahead of you, you can have a stress-free and fun renovating journey and actually Renovate Happy.

Meet the Team

Mina Fies

Founder & CEO

Passionate about home renovations, Mina creates spaces that nurture and empower clients through a methodical and holistic approach.

Having worked in the real estate, sales, and design fields since 1994, Mina experienced first-hand the frustration and dissatisfaction of homeowners during the remodeling process. She and her husband developed a unique system (the Renovation Roadmap™), which alleviates frustration by choreographing all aspects of the remodeling process – from concept to completion.

Also a Certified Practitioner of Interior Alignment™ (Instinctive Feng Shui) and Certified Green Professional (CGP), Mina believes understanding and embracing the spaces around us is the key to living healthier, happier, and more environmentally friendly lives.

As the founder and CEO of Synergy Design & Construction, she is responsible for overseeing the design, sales, marketing, and client experience in all aspects of every renovation.

Mina speaks regularly at industry conferences and seminars and has been interviewed for national, local, and online media outlets. As Past President of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) Greater DC Chapter, Mina is committed to helping women business owners take their business to the next level.

Mina is a native Virginian who lives and works with her husband in Reston. She enjoys biking, camping, yoga and is an avid writer and golfer – with the accomplishment (luck) of an 83 yard hole-in-one.

Mark Fies

Chief Operating Officer

Mark Fies has brought his extensive expertise in structure and process development into the design and construction industry. Along with his wife, Mina Fies, he helped develop Synergy Design & Construction’s unique model for design, renovations, and new construction.

Mark is no stranger to running a business. Prior to entering the design/build industry, he managed the operations of six multimillion-dollar facilities for two Fortune 500 companies, five of which were new store openings in emerging markets. He has over 18 years in retail management, including process implementation and improvement, employee management, finance, and direct customer relations.

Mark proudly served on the Board of Directors as Chairman of the Board and past President for the metropolitan area’s chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), the only independent national association dedicated solely to the remodeling industry. Mark shares NARI’s focus on professional conduct, continuing education and training, and fair and ethical treatment within the industry. As an authority in the remodeling industry, Mark was also invited to participate in Harvard's Remodeling Futures Program, part of their Joint Center for Housing Studies.

For her, the diversity of the area and the sense of community that Reston’s founder, Robert E. Simon, created and cultivated have truly made it home.

Lisa Lockerby

Project Manager

Born and raised in Northern Virginia, Lisa has always loved the eclectic blend of modern and historical architecture of the area. Her passion for design and construction flourished while pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Virginia, where she was influenced by the innovations and architectural feats of Thomas Jefferson.

Lisa began her professional career working for a large, DC area general contractor, where she developed a deep understanding of interior construction and project management on and off the construction site. She then honed her residential skills working for a developer of high-rise, luxury condominiums. She was an integral part of the entire project life cycle from land acquisition, to design, through construction and sale of the properties. Lisa has extensive experience in managing an array of diverse projects – from fast-paced, small renovations to major, multi year, ground-up developments with budgets exceeding $80million. She has developed a vast base of expertise that she brings to every new opportunity and challenge.

As a Project Manager at Synergy Design & Construction, Lisa actively applies her construction experience, eye for detail, and organizational skills to ensure every project runs smoothly, on time and on budget, and exceeds client expectations.

When she's not in a hardhat, Lisa spends her time discovering new things to love about her hometown where she is an avid fan of live music and sporting events, an active member of her church, and a competitive participant in her family game nights.

Camille DeLew

Interior Designer

Camille fell in love with design at an early age. Constantly changing her bedroom wall color, she found it intriguing how different the room could look with a touch of color and texture.

After a successful career in the Advertising and Publishing fields, she decided to use her creativity, eye for color and detail, project management and business skills to pursue her passion. She furthered her design education, gained experience working at a local design-build firm and then set up her own interior design company before finding her home at Synergy Design and Construction.

A true design enthusiast, she believes the best-designed spaces are those that feel like you — spaces that are not only beautiful to look at, but also comfortable to live in. She's passionate about mixing color, pattern, texture and personal touches to create unified interiors. Getting to know clients is one of her favorite aspects of the job, allowing her to personalize projects with beautiful results.

Originally from New York, she now resides in Northern Virginia with her husband and two children. When she's not transforming client homes, she'll most likely be cooking, decorating her own home or spending time on the soccer field.

Emily Bickl

Interior Designer, UDCP

With an eye for symmetry and cohesion and a love of space planning, Emily enjoys interpreting people’s desires and creating great-looking spaces. Her personal style is cozy, homey, and fresh, and she loves to add personality to designs with color and light.

Emily plays a key role in Synergy Design & Construction’s pre-construction services including all phases of design and plan development. Responsibilities include taking field measurements and documenting existing conditions, preparation of conceptual floor plans, design development, and 3D renderings. Emily is also a Universal Design Certified Professional (UDCP) and is skilled in creating accessible spaces for all people, not only to those who wish to age-in-place but also families with special needs and families that are forward thinking.

Emily earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design at Cornell University. Her industry experience began working hands-on for a small home remodeler where she laid tile, hung sheetrock, painted, and constructed decks. After serving several residential and commercial architectural firms performing site surveys, field measurements, drafting, and creating precise construction documents, Emily joined the Synergy team in 2010. Since then, she's been involved in almost all aspects of nearly every renovation project, and has developed a special love for bringing spaces together with effective floorplans and beautiful custom cabinetry.
