Updates to the floorplan included opening up a former office, as well as removing several storage closets, to achieve an open-concept rec room complete with media area, game area, walk-up counter, and wet bar, where users in each of the spaces can easily interact with one another. Meanwhile, a bedroom, full bath, and storage closets were added in a previously unfinished space, increasing the functionality of the lower level while maintaining only the unfinished storage that the clients really needed. The result is a whole new lifestyle space in the basement, which can now entertain and accommodate the clients’ children, friends of all ages, and overnight guests!
Our team also helped the couple rework the finishes in the basement to reflect their personal style. Dark cabinetry and furniture lend a sense of moodiness and coziness to the area, while light gray walls ensure the basement doesn’t feel too dark, despite only having windows on one side. Mixed metals in black and gold bring a sense of luxe and a nostalgic feel. We also helped the clients choose shiplap painted in an accent color to wrap the necessary columns we had to include in the open rec room due to existing structural features. The focal treatment makes the columns purposeful and adds character to the basement.
Other features of the remodel include new cable railings at the existing stairs, a custom floating wood countertop for perching at the game area, and new plumbing run for the bath which includes a prefabricated vanity and a fully-tiled shower. The after images of the new basement speak volumes – gone is the under-used furniture and the empty space that sat without a purpose. The new basement area is full and life and fun, ready to accommodate guests and parties, as well as good old-fashioned family time!
